They crossed the border and moved into homes – Three migrants detained in Ceuta

Officers of Spain’s National Police have detained three Moroccan nationals who illegally occupied residential properties in different districts of Ceuta, an autonomous Spanish city.

TodayPress TV reports, citing EFE, that the detentions were carried out with the assistance of local residents.

The migrants had been staying illegally in the city since the end of July.

According to the agency, all three are expected to appear in court soon on suspicion of illegally entering private property.

It should be recalled that at the end of July, tens of thousands of irregular migrants managed to reach Ceuta by swimming around the breakwater separating the city from Morocco, as well as by wading through shallow waters. Due to the crisis, Madrid decided to deploy military personnel to help maintain security in the settlement.

According to estimates by the authorities, up to 80,000 people could have entered the city, although the overwhelming majority of irregular migrants are believed to have already returned to Morocco. Juan Jesús Vivas, head of the Ceuta government, has asked the EU to permanently deploy staff from Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, in the city to monitor the situation related to irregular migration.
