“We hear the word ‘war’ more often than ‘peace’” – Is Rome moving closer to the negotiating table?

The Italian government could play a role in resolving the Ukraine conflict.

TodayPress TV reports that Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Matteo Salvini spoke about the issue.

“Italy can play a role, and I do not rule anything out in the coming months. However, it is difficult to imagine leaders who use the word ‘war’ more often than the word ‘peace’ sitting at the negotiating table as third parties,” the politician said.

He said the Italian government has always sought to be more cautious and restrained than other European capitals. Salvini also emphasized that the EU’s role in resolving the conflict in Ukraine is not necessarily indispensable.

Nevertheless, Salvini stressed that Russia and Ukraine must find a solution in the medium and long term:

“But we must contribute to this process. I read about the mediation efforts of US President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping and India. The more parties involved in the search for ways to resolve the conflict, the better. However, the leaders of the countries involved in the conflict must decide who will stand where, when and along which line of contact.”
