Lithuania and Poland oppose the EU – Call for migration pact to be reviewed

Lithuania and Poland intend to ask Brussels to reconsider the European Union’s (EU) Pact on Migration and Asylum.

TodayPress TV reports that Lithuania’s and Poland’s interior ministers, Martinas Katelinas and Marcin Kierwinski, said this at a joint press conference.

“The migration pact does not respond to the current situation. This is demonstrated not only by the situation in our region, but also by the situation in southern Europe. We share the same view on this issue and believe that the pact should be reviewed so that it genuinely meets the needs of member states,” the statement said.

The head of Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry noted that Vilnius would raise the issue of reviewing the pact during its presidency of the Council of the EU, which begins on January 1, 2027.

“I hope that during our presidency, serious decisions will be adopted that will change the face of European migration policy,” the minister said.

It should be noted that critics consider the main shortcomings of the pact, which entered into force in June, to be restrictions on the powers of border protection authorities and the implementation of a solidarity mechanism. Under this mechanism, EU member states are required to accept a share of irregular migrants when the bloc’s border countries come under pressure from migration flows.
