Erdogan preparing for elections, but… – AKP issues statement
There are currently no preparations for snap elections on the agenda of Türkiye’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) or President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. However, he is potentially always preparing for the upcoming elections.
TodayPress TV reports that AKP spokesperson Ömer Çelik made the statement following a meeting of the party’s Central Executive Board.
“For those who know our President’s political style, it is clear that when he talks about preparing for the next elections, this in no way means an intention to hold them early. When he meets our citizens, hears their support and sees the work of our party organizations, he often repeats the following phrase: ‘We are preparing for the upcoming elections and we will achieve great success.’ This is not a signal that snap elections will be held. There are currently no elections on Türkiye’s agenda,” Çelik explained.
He noted that the President of Türkiye always pays close attention to the issue of elections and preparations for them and frequently expresses his views on the matter. However, this is simply his political style and does not constitute a signal of an early vote.
It should be noted that discussions about the possibility of holding snap elections in Türkiye periodically resurface.
The scheduled date for the general elections is May 7, 2028, although April 16, 2028, is also being considered as an alternative date.
