Salinity rises, sharks begin appearing from the oceans

New species of fish and other marine life have appeared in the Sea of Azov from the Black Sea, as well as from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, as a result of record-high salinity levels.

TodayPress TV reports, citing the Southern Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, that the information was provided to RIA Novosti.

According to scientists, the salinity of the Sea of Azov began increasing in 2007 and has reached 16 parts per thousand. This is the highest level recorded in 150 years of observations.

The increase in salinity has caused changes in the marine ecosystem, with the body of water shifting from the characteristics of a low-salinity sea to those of a typical sea. Experts said the new conditions have proven favorable for Black Sea flounder, spiny dogfish sharks and some fish species from the mullet family.

“Round-nosed and aurita jellyfish are also actively entering the Sea of Azov from the Black Sea,” the scientists said.

In addition, marine life originating from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans has also begun appearing in the Sea of Azov. These include silver seabream, haarder mullet, sunfish and oriental shrimp.
