Historic announcement from Britain: Russia is now our main adversary

A senior British naval commander has called for a major strengthening of the Royal Navy.

TodayPress TV reports, citing The Telegraph, that Britain’s First Sea Lord, General Sir Gwyn Jenkins, has described Russia as currently the greatest threat to the country’s security.

He said Britain must increase its defence preparedness and reconsider what it means to be a maritime nation. According to Jenkins, countering Russia’s submarines, long-range weapons and expanding underwater capabilities is becoming increasingly difficult.

British commanders believe that more warships, unmanned aerial vehicles and combat-ready forces are needed to ensure the security of the Atlantic Ocean.

The warning has brought renewed calls for the North Atlantic to be placed at the centre of Britain’s defence priorities. Russia’s expanding submarine activity and growing capabilities to threaten critical maritime infrastructure have revived the issue of restoring some of the naval capabilities of the United Kingdom and its NATO allies that weakened after the Cold War.

It was noted that for London, safeguarding the security of the Atlantic Ocean is not merely a naval mission but is also of strategic importance for transporting NATO forces to Europe and ensuring the broader security of the continent.
