Three people emerge from sewer near UN headquarters — Police step up security

New York police have stepped up security measures around the United Nations headquarters.

TodayPress TV reports, citing police as quoted by The New York Times, that three unidentified individuals emerged from a manhole in front of a hotel in Manhattan where participants of the UN General Assembly were staying on the night of September 23.

They then got into two vehicles and left the area.

Police said several similar incidents involving people entering the sewer system in search of valuables and scrap metal have been recorded in recent months. According to preliminary information, this incident appears to be similar to those cases.

Nevertheless, in connection with the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, police and federal forces have begun conducting additional security checks in the area.

NBC News reported that the incident occurred near a hotel where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was scheduled to stay. According to the outlet, there is no information indicating that the incident was connected to Netanyahu or the UN General Assembly.

The main general debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly is being held from September 22 to 26 and on September 28.
