A boat carrying migrants from Libya to the island of Crete has taken on water and become stranded.

TodayPress TV reports that at least one person has died in the incident, while 20 others are believed to be missing.

The Hellenic Coast Guard said 51 people were rescued from the site of the incident, which occurred approximately 75 kilometers (47 miles) south of Crete.

According to the Associated Press, patrol boats, a helicopter, a drone and commercial vessels have been involved in the search operation, conducted with the support of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex).

It should be noted that as the number of migrants has generally declined along other routes, the dangerous Mediterranean route from eastern Libya toward Crete has become one of the most active routes for irregular migration to Europe.
