US immigration policy could change – POLL

A new poll conducted in the United States has found significant bipartisan agreement among Democrats and Republicans on immigration policy, TodayPress TV reports.

According to a study by the University of Maryland’s Program for Public Consultation, voters from both parties support granting legal status under certain conditions to undocumented immigrants who have lived in the United States for many years and have not committed crimes.

According to respondents, such individuals should be eligible for legal resident status provided they pay a fine and settle their outstanding tax obligations.

A majority of both Democratic and Republican voters also supported a proposal to provide a pathway to citizenship for people who were brought to the United States illegally as children and have not committed serious crimes.

By contrast, the deportation of undocumented immigrants who have committed crimes received broad support from voters of both parties.

Respondents also supported two key measures aimed at reducing the number of migrants who enter the United States illegally for employment:

Employers should verify the legal status of new workers through the E-Verify system.

The number of work visas should be increased in line with demand in the labor market.

A majority of both Democrats and Republicans surveyed in all of the competitive states and congressional districts included in the poll supported this proposal.

The survey also examined whether measures should be taken to prevent asylum seekers in the United States from waiting for years for their cases to be heard in court.

A majority of respondents supported increasing the number of judges and other personnel handling asylum cases.

The study was conducted among more than 19,000 people in 11 competitive states and 28 congressional districts in May and June 2026.
