Shanghai Organization: A united front against the US?

Strengthening positions against the global influence of the United States is one of the main topics against the backdrop of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s Bishkek summit. The European Parliament openly views the summit as an attempt to create a counterbalance to US influence. Is a united front against the US emerging within the SCO?

Political analyst Abutalib Samadov spoke to TodayPress TV about the issue.

He said that one of the main topics of the Shanghai Cooperation Summit is the creation of a multipolar world. Although there is no explicit opposition to US hegemony, it is clear that the members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and countries seeking membership are concerned about US policies, its disregard for international law and its failure to respect the sovereignty of states.

“At the same time, they are not openly proposing the creation of a front against the United States. This is also understandable, because several members of the organization have established close cooperation with the US and benefit from this cooperation. Others want to maintain relations with it. Even China itself, despite having been concerned about US policies for years, favors maintaining normal relations with Washington, and the Chinese leader openly said that we do not intend to turn this organization into a bloc against anyone.”

He noted that this is the right approach. Because the United States is one of China’s largest trading partners, both China and the US have an interest in maintaining normal relations.

“However, there is no denying that the arrest of a country’s president after being dragged out of his bed, states making territorial claims against one another, and the fact that leaders of countries whose security concepts are unacceptable to the United States may not remain in power naturally concern everyone. Such conduct and attitudes force everyone to think seriously,” the analyst added.

Abutalib Samadov stressed in conclusion that the leaders of the states belonging to the SCO are highly experienced and wise politicians. They also understand that taking a confrontational stance against the United States could create considerable problems for the member states of the organization.
