Fierce fighting in this Iranian region: Clashes and killings reported

A bloody crackdown by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is reportedly unfolding in the Sistan and Baluchestan region, where assassinations are being carried out almost daily.

According to TodayPress TV’s investigation, several militant groups have joined forces in the region and claim to be fighting for control of all of Iran. However, at least one of these groups has historically been associated with Baloch separatism and follows a distinctly conservative Sunni ideology.

Nevertheless, the scale of the fighting over the past several weeks has been striking. IRGC members, Basij forces, clerics affiliated with the regime and foreign militants have been targeted. Police stations, military bases and checkpoints have come under attack, while patrols have also been targeted. Clashes have reportedly extended as far as Kerman Province.

A female Basij commander was killed outside her home, dozens of Afghan militants were reportedly neutralised, and clerics affiliated with the regime were shot dead. Most of the assassinations have targeted senior officials, making it extremely dangerous to be identified as a symbol of the Islamic regime in Sistan and Baluchestan.

Key indicators of the developments:

The Islamic regime is losing control of the region.

Regime enforcers who previously felt secure can no longer enjoy that sense of safety. Serious morale problems are reportedly emerging, particularly among lower-ranking Basij members who have been unable to receive their salaries, partly due to sanctions.

If the tensions persist, the regime will be forced to redeploy substantial forces from other regions to Sistan and Baluchestan. The deployment of thousands of IRGC personnel to fight in the southeast could reduce the number of forces available to carry out repression in other provinces, potentially easing pressure on opposition movements there.

In short, developments in Sistan and Baluchestan should be viewed as a dynamic that could have serious consequences for Iran as a whole in the coming months.
