Armenia is arming itself, and its generals are frequently visiting the border
“Armenia is still Armenia… A peace agreement has not yet been signed. We expected the agreement to be signed, but the process is dragging on. We had hoped that, after the elections in Armenia and the confirmation of the prime minister’s powers, the Constitution would be amended, territorial claims against Azerbaijan and Türkiye would be removed, and a peace agreement would finally be signed. However, the process is being delayed once again.”
TodayPress TV reports that former MP Vahid Ahmadov made these remarks in an interview with Globalinfo.az.
“Another important point is that Armenia continues to engage in significant arms procurement. It is buying weapons from India, establishing ties with other countries and receiving various forms of assistance for its military build-up. The question is: why is Armenia arming itself so heavily? After all, it has no intention of waging war against Russia, and it is not a major military power. Armenia is a small country. All of this raises certain concerns.
“On the other hand, it is also noteworthy that Armenian army generals frequently visit the border and inspect border areas. I do not know exactly why they are taking these steps. However, I believe Azerbaijan should take precautionary measures and strengthen its security.”
Ahmadov added that President Ilham Aliyev’s provision for allocating approximately 9 billion manats to security and defence in the 2027 state budget was also significant in this regard.
“This is a substantial amount. Additional weapons should be purchased with these funds, defensive fortifications should be built, and security along the border should be further strengthened. At the same time, the relocation of people to villages in the liberated territories should be accelerated so that residents can settle there.
“In short, positive steps in relations are welcome. But, as the proverb goes, even if you make peace with your enemy, you must never let your guard down.”
